Ruins of Rosary Church @ Shettihalli

This church which was called the Holy Rosary Church was built by French Missionaries around 1860. It was abandoned when the Hemavathi Reservoir was built and now it is in ruins.

When the water rises in the Hemavathi reservoir every year this church gets submerged. When the water recedes the ruins of the church stands tall surrounded by the Hemavathi river in the back ground and green grassland around it, striking a great contrast and is a wonderful sight to watch.
Shettihalli is a small village situated on the the banks of the Hemavathi reservoir about 25 Kms from Hassan city.

driving direction from Hassan

Shettihalli was in our to do list for a long time. We go through  Hassan every time we visit Mangalore  but we could not take that diversion to Shettihalli for one reason or the other. So finally we decided that Shettihalli trip has to be done separately some day. And that some day came on 26th Jan 2013.  This trip was different from rest of our trips so far in more than one way. To start with, this was a trip to visit just one place, we had never had trip like that before; a 2 days trip, our shortest trip till now and a trip with least planning.

26th Jan 2013 :

We left at around 9:00 AM from Bangalore and reached Hassan at 12:30 PM. We had very less traffic to tackle with as it was holiday and 4 lane road for most part of our journey made driving easy. Stopped for a coffee @ Coffee Day en-route, drive was mostly uneventful. We booked room in Sri Krishna @ Hassan and had our lunch. We left for Shettihalli at 3:00 PM.

We saw a tiny temple on the way

We used the google map on mobile for direction which failed half way through because of lack of signal. So stopped and checked for directions with locals and reached Shettihalli at 4:00 PM.
We parked the car with a couple of other cars there and walked towards the church. Road to church from the main road is kacha road with no tarmac. Made up my mind to try some soft offroading here. So went back to the car and started driving through this road towards church.

road towards the church

People who had parked their cars on the road side were coming back and advised us not to go further as the road condition was not good ahead. I decided to drive cautiously and see how bad the road is and return back if i can not go any further. Road was indeed bad but i was able to drive without scraping the bottom of the car.

Shettihalli Rosary Church

Parked the car here and walked around to explore the place a bit.  Walked till the church to check the road condition ahead.

Near the main entrance of the church

A water tanker had finished filling water and going in far corner which caught my attention.  The  location attracted me and wanted to take my car there to click. So i started walking back to where the car was parked.

There were not just the church ruins out there

Drove towards the point where i had seen the water tanker.  Parked the car right in front of the broken bridge which is as far as any vehicle can go.

In front of the broken bridge

We drove back to the church again and parked the car right in front of it. By this time few vehicles had come near the church ( may be inspired by our adventure).  Any car with decent ground clearance can be driven carefully here with out any problem.

We parked our car aside and started clicking some photos of the church ruins. Crowd was building up around us and so was the number of vehicles.   There was a group of local guys who chose to use this area as their bar and started troubling the people around them.  When they saw some more tourists coming they left the place as they were easily out numbered.

main road was not far from there ( new bridge across reservoir)

We sat down on the banks of the back waters and enjoyed the cool breeze and the surroundings.  Sun was setting, the temperature was dropping and the people were leaving.

By the time sun was set everyone had left and we were the last 2 people there. And i was busy clicking the pictures with setting sun in the back ground.

what a sunset it was

we waited for the moon to rise

By this time it had become very dark . We left from there at 7:00 PM and returned to the room at 7:30 PM . Had a early dinner and retired to bed.

27th Jan 2013 :

Woke up by 5 AM, asked the watchman to give our car a nice wash as i had intentions of clicking more photos  of her and we too got freshened up and left at 5:45 AM. Stopped for a wonderful hot cup of tea in a small chai shop in near by village on the way and reached Shettihalli church at 6:30 AM. Mist was settling in and weather was chill. Checked the MID in car and found that the outside temperature was 10 degree C.

We waited for the sun to rise as we enjoyed the calm and cold morning near the church. Again we were the only people there at this time of the day.

parting shot of Rosary Church

After clicking photos in early morning golden light we left for our room at 7:30 AM. Reached the room by 8:15 AM, had a complimentary breakfast and left for Bangalore at 10:00 AM. Reached home at 2:30 PM after our lunch on the way. A weekend well spent and an awesome short trip.

for the album

There is no entry fee or any security guard to protect this area. I do hope if you are headed there, you will maintain the sanctity of the place and will not litter the place with broken beer bottles and plastic among  many. With little luck we’d find such places, I hope it stays pristine for years to come.

Birding around Bangalore

It was suppose to be one of the regular trips to Kushalnagar to meet my in laws. I was going through some of the very old photographs and found some photos i had taken in 2004 using a film camera i had during my visit to Kokkare Bellur. So started thinking about visiting Kokkare Bellur on our way to Kushalnagar from Bangalore.

About Kokkare Bellur:
"Kokkare Bellur (Village of Storks), a small village off the main highway between Bangalore and Mysore, is one of the few nesting sites in India of the spotbilled pelican. In addition, it is also home to hundreds of painted storks. The best time to see the pelicans is in December and January. The place is not a sanctuary, and the storks and pelicans live freely in the trees in the middle of village and are quite used to their human neighbors.
The village is located off the Mysore highway, about 75 km from Bangalore. There is a road sign for Kokkare Bellur, but it is easy to miss. The village is 12 km from the main highway. If you are approaching from Bangalore side of the Mysore road, look out for a left after the first Cafe Coffee Day on the highway. Alternatively, ask for BPL factory which is around the corner of that turn."

2nd Apr 2011 :

We left early by 5:30 AM from Bangalore, went through nice road and reached Mysore road in 20 mins,  since it was early morning we hardly had any vehicles and driving was easy. We reached "Kamath Upachar"  on Mysore road at 7:00 AM and had our breakfast. We left from there at 7:25 AM and reached Kokkare Bellur. It is advisable to have food on one of the hotels on the Bangalore - Mysore highway as option for food in this village is very basic. And it is also advisable to reach there early before the birds starts flying out in search of food to nearby fields and ponds.

Kokkare Bellur

We parked our car under a tree and started walking around the village. Here birds build nest on all trees in the entire village. Entire village waits for these birds to arrive every year and they try to preserve all the trees in the village for the birds to build nest on them. During peak season every tree is fileld with these migratory birds.

  There were other birds too.

And we also found  some nests

Even with all the birds around, people in the village were busy with their daily routines.

It was almost 9:00 AM now. And birds had started leaving their nest in search of food. As per the recommendation by the villagers we drove to a near by pond where birds usually go for fishing. We found few birds here.

Whistling duck

A man on the banks of this pond drew our attention. Closer look at him revealed that he is a "Shanka dasa". Shanka dasa is a person who blows a "Shanka" and rings a bell or "gante" when he sings some traditional songs. He goes from house to house singing these songs and begging. he was getting ready for his daily routine.

Found a white heron near the pond who was busy fishing. I waited for him to get used to my presence and realize that i am no threat to him. After about 10 minutes of patience he was comfortable me being around and was happy to pose.

By this time it was close to 11:00 AM. Weather was hot and birds had left in search of food and shade. We too decided to leave from Kokkare Bullur. We drove towards Kushalnagar and reached home by 2:00 PM for lunch.
After lunch when we were going through pictures clicked in the morning topic of bird sanctuary cropped up for discussion and the name Ranganathittu was mentioned. In the evening i spoke to my wife about we missing a chance to visit Ranganathittu today as it was on our way to Kushalnagar and the decision was made that we will visit Ranganathittu on our way back to Bangalore.2 more days passed by in in laws place lazing around. So it was time for us leave back to Bangalore.

About Ranganathittu:
"Ranganthittu Bird Sanctuary also known as Paksi Kashi of Karnataka is a Bird Sanctuary in the Mandya District of the state of Karnataka in India. It is the largest bird sanctuary in the state, only 0.67 km². in area, which is about 40 acres and comprises six islets on the banks of the Kaveri river. Ranganthittu is located three kilometers away from the historic town of Srirangapatna and 16 kilometres (9.9 mi) north of Mysore."

Map shows the deviation towards Ranganathittu from Bangalore - Mysore highway. This deviation is after you cross the Srirangapatna town towards Mysore.

5th Apr 2011 :

We left home by 8:00 AM after our breakfast. Road from coorg - Mysore is a wonderful stretch to drive and traffic is very less. We  reached Ranganthittu before 10:00 AM. it is close to 90 KMs of drive from Kushalnagar. If you are coming from Coorg, take a deviation to left at Elivala and reach the junction shown int eh map above from the opposite side on KRS road and take left towards Ranganthittu bird sanctury, it is about 15 KMs drive from Elivala junction.
In Ranganthittu birds are concentrated in an island within the Kaveri river and best option to view them up close is by taking a boat ride. These rides usually lasts about 1 hour. And boat man gives an option of extending the ride by another 30 minutes to "least explored" places for a predefined tip.

This is the nest made by very tiny birds called Mud Swallow using the clay picked from the bank of the river. They mix the mud with their sticky saliva and build these nests. They build their individual tiny nests and they never miss their house.

After the boat ride for 90 minutes we explored the area by walk looking for more birds and left that place around 2:30 PM. We had our lunch on our way and reached Bangalore by 6:00 PM.
